WATCH: SAPS operation cracks down on illegal mining

Illegal mining structures were destroyed during the operation

A multidisciplinary operation, led by Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko and Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, cracked the whip on illegal mining operations in Golden Drive, on September 1.

The routine operation known as Okae Molao (where is the law) saw law enforcement units, including officers from the Benoni SAPS, EMPD, home affairs as well as private security companies focus their operations on illegal activities throughout the city.

During a blitz conducted at the illegal mining operations along Golden Drive, police arrested over 30 undocumented nationals, aged between 13 and 54.

Blasting equipment, originating from Zambia was also seized.

“We are targeting these operations specifically, we want the zama-zama’s to know that their presence in our cities will no longer be tolerated,” said Mawela.

“We will continue to disrupt their operations, we will continue to seize their tools and we will destroy their structures until it is no longer profitable for them to mine here.”

To supplement the operation, a roadblock was set up on Paul Kruger Road, Kingsway, during which two suspected stolen vehicles as well as illicit cigarettes were seized.

Seven illegal liquor outlets identified as contributors to crime were also closed.

More than 1 050 people were traced and arrested on various charges including cases relating to GBV.
