EMPD uncovers explosives stash

“All three suspects are facing charges of being in possession of explosives and additional charges may be added, under the Migrations Act,”

Three Zimbabwean nationals were arrested on August 10 when explosives were found concealed in a vehicle following an accident.

The arrests come after members of the EMPD Specialised Task Team and the EMPD Anti-Truck Hijacking units were conducting routine patrols on Kingsway Road.

“Officers spotted a grey Nisssan Micra driving recklessly towards Brazil Street and attempted to stop the vehicle,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa.

“A chase ensued when the driver refused to bring the vehicle to a stop. He lost control of the vehicle and collided with a steel barricade at the corner of Brazil and Mathewson streets.”

The driver and woman allegedly attempted to flee into a nearby veld but were apprehended.

“Upon searching the vehicle, officers found 11 blasting cartridges and 25 capped fuses concealed by a black jacket,” said Thepa.

“After being interrogated the suspects led officers to a house in Mayfield Extension 6 where a further 341 blasting cartridges were found.”

Following the discovery, the suspects also led officers to another home in Cloverdene.

“At the second location a woman was found in possession of 316 capped fuses concealed in maize bags,” she said.
