Man (42) sentenced to life for rape

Magistrate Ian Cox further found him unfit to be in possession of a firearm.

A Putfontein man was sentenced to life imprisonment on August 1, following the rape of a then 15-year-old girl.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, the case was reported to the Putfontein SAPS in December 2019 and handed over to the Benoni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for investigation.

The victim claimed that on December 17 she was at a local tavern with friends, when the man at about 03:30 offered to take them home.

He took her and a friend to another house, where he threatened them with a knife before taking her to the bedroom and raping her.

“The accused was previously sentenced to 25 years on an unrelated case of rape. He received a life sentence for the rape of the 15-year-old, as he was not a first-time offender.

“We commend Detective Constable Edwin Moraba for his hard work in securing the conviction,” said Sekele.
