Community gathers to clean Homestead Dam pathway

"Cleanliness is next to holiness. Just clean up where you are."

Lack of education on the effects of littering on the environment is the reason many people continue to litter, said Jubilatè Church member and Farrarmere resident Amair Kluever.

Kluever said this during the clean-up of the Homestead Dam pathway by Ward 28 residents on July 30.

“Cleanliness is next to holiness. Just clean up where you are. We aren’t supposed to clean up after one another. Nobody wants to stay in a pigsty.”

Shirley, Joshua and Nimie Nathaniel from the Farrarmere Congregational Church clean the Homestead Dam pathway.

She said after seeing the overgrown weeds and vegetation on the pathway, she and 14 other people decided to clean up the area.

“For our Mandela Day project, 15 of us came together to clean up the pathway. We didn’t finish and we then decided to challenge the community to come and help us. If everyone does a little bit, we will finish quickly.”

Kluever bemoaned the constant littering in several areas in Benoni, which has resulted in the mushrooming of illegal dumping sites with heaps of garbage.

Liesl Oosthuizen joined Ward 28 residents for the clean-up of the Homestead Dam pathway.

“God asks us to make life better for one another and to also look after what he gave us – which is nature. We have to do this to make the world a better place for all of us.

She’s challenged the Farrarmere community to continue playing their part in keeping their area clean.

“If every household in Farrarmere gives one hour of their time per month, it can make a huge difference in maintaining the walkway.”

Ward 28 Clr Mary Goby thanked the residents for their efforts to keep Homestead Dam clean.

Ward 28 Clr Mary Goby joined the community for the Homestead Dam clean-up.

“We are doing it for Mandela Month. We are ending Mandela Month by cleaning up the pathway and making the area cleaner.

“There is litter that was picked up beforehand. We are worried about the pathway. We want to thank the private individuals and companies that have helped us clean up the area today,” she said.
