Stolen motorbike parts worth R200 000 concealed in trailer

The officers received a lookout minutes before spotting the van and trailer.

EMPD officers arrested four suspects at the Tom Jones offramp on August 1 at around 15:00 after finding stolen motorbike parts worth R200 000 on a trailer.

Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa explained that their Northern Task Team was conducting a crime prevention operation on the N12 when they received a lookout alert for an active tracking device moving from Gillooly’s interchange toward the N12 in the Bedfordview area.

“It was not long after receiving the alert that the officers spotted the subject of the alert, a white Isuzu single cab LDV, at the Tom Jones offramp and stopped the vehicle,” Thepa said.

“It was towing a trailer and had four ‘co-operative’ occupants, including the driver. Officers inspected the bakkie, and the occupants became restless when they were about to search the trailer.

“They quickly told officers they transported goods for people, usually from Johannesburg to Mozambique.

“Officers searched the trailer and found two half-stripped motorbikes, motorbike parts concealed in two bed bases, and another motorbike concealed in a bath.

The men gave officers vague explanations and could not produce official documents for their cargo.

Some of the motorbike parts were tested and found to have been reported stolen at the Silverton Police Station.

“The four, aged between 35 and 37, were arrested and detained at the Benoni SAPS for possession of suspected stolen goods.”
