Five arrested for driving under the influence

A taxi driver tried to bribe his way out of being arrested for driving under the influence.

On April 28 at about 15:00, the EMPD Bronberg Precinct officers conducted an operation focused on drunken driving in the Crystal Park area, according to Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa, EMPD spokesperson.

Five suspects between the ages of 18 and 35 were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance and bribery.

The officers conducted their operation on Kingsway Road, where they stopped and searched multiple vehicles.

“The 35-year-old driver of a Polo Vivo, who was suspected to be under the influence of an intoxicating substance, was taken to a hospital to have a blood sample drawn, and thereafter arrested.

“As the operation continued on Durant and Birch roads, an additional four suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance.

“One of them, a 28-year-old taxi driver, tried his luck by attempting to bribe an officer and an additional charge of bribery was levied against him,” Thepa said.

All they were all detained at Crystal Park Police Station on charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance and bribery and will appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court soon.
