Local cycling club dedicates Amashova race to ailing member

The club's members will tackle the Amashova's 106km and 65km races on behalf of the cyclist.

The Mpongo Cycling Club will dedicate their participation in the Amashova National Classic Race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on October 20, to Tebogo Phangela.

She is in the ICU after being involved in an accident on Kingsway Road on September 30. Phangela was riding back to Daveyton from Springs that evening when the accident occurred.

“Tebogo checked for oncoming cars before crossing but unfortunately her front tyre hit an obstacle, causing her to lose control. She fell onto the road and was dragged by a courier van,” said Mpongo chairperson Maswazi Mdluli.

Mdluli explained because Phangela was dragged for several metres it caused severe injuries to her upper and lower body, adding they were thankful to emergency medical services for their swift response after being called to the scene.

The chairperson of Mpongo Cycling Club Maswazi Mdluli (in black) with some members of the club visited Tebogo Phangela in hospital.

“Our club members visited her in hospital recently and continue to give her support. As Tebogo recovers, we ask for your thoughts and prayers. Let’s rally behind Tebogo during this challenging time.”

In solidarity, Mdluli and some members of the club will take part in the Amashova 65km (from Drew Lane in Cato Ridge to Masabala Yengwa Pedestrian Bridge in Durban) and 106km (from Pietermaritzburg City Hall to Masabala Yengwa Pedestrian Bridge) races in honour of Phangela.

The chairperson described Phangela as a dedicated member of Mpongo who is always available to assist whenever her services are required.

“Cyclists, please exercise extreme caution when encountering road debris. Remain attentive to your surroundings to prevent accidents and injuries. By adopting a proactive approach, we contribute to a safer and more enjoyable riding experience for everyone,” Mdluli said.
