CBD crime blitz leads to 102 arrests

Blitzes of this nature will continue during the lead-up and throughout the festive season.

A total of 102 foreign nationals were arrested on October 9, as members of the Benoni Police Station and other stakeholders took to the streets to conduct a high-density operation in the CBD.

Officers from the police station along with members from neighbouring police stations, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, Home Affairs officials, Highway Patrol, National Traffic, Siyabangena members (community in blue), CPF patrollers as well as officials from the Ekurhuleni metro’s city planning and economic development departments were deployed into the inner-city streets from 08:00 to 16:00.

“Operations were focused at increasing police visibility throughout the city as we gear up for the festive season,” said Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni SAPS.

Law enforcers paraded at Kit Kat Cash and Carry before hitting the streets during the high-density operation.

“Foreign nationals were arrested for contravention of the immigration act while 36 traffic fines were issued to the value of R19 600.

“Further activities included inspections carried out at 26 second-hand tyre shops as well as the demolition of illegal structures.”

Acting station commander Colonel Reginah Rampota commended the efforts by law enforcers for making a tangible impact in the fight against crime.
