The deputy principal of Rivoni Secondary School, Sipho Nhlengethwa (51), was lauded for his unwavering commitment to his work.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane and district officials visited Nhlengethwa’s home in Dersley, Springs, on October 10.
Nhlengethwa was fatally shot on October 8 at the Chris Hani informal settlement in Daveyton while attending a meeting related to a case involving one of his colleagues.
Speaking outside his home, Chiloane said Nhlengethwa’s death would not be in vain because the provincial police are handling the matter.
“The police will find the perpetrators behind this heinous crime. We are here to support and pass our condolences to the family.
“He died doing good, and he died on duty. He was a committed educator who symbolised how a teacher should be.”
Chiloane declined to provide details about the case involving Nhlengethwa’s colleague.
The colleague’s hearing was reportedly scheduled for October 9 but was postponed because of the shooting.
Nhlengethwa’s son, Mpumelelo, said the family is still in shock and saddened by the tragic incident.
“My father was an honest man who loved his job and family. He did mention to us that there were problems at work, but he wanted to solve them.”
Mpumelelo said his father started teaching at Rivoni Secondary School in 2007, where he taught history and geography.
His funeral will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kwa-Thema tomorrow (October 12).
