Karateka rake in medals at championship

The karateka competed in kata, kumite, team kata and weapons.

Shihan Catherine Venter of the Tenshinkan Karate Club expressed her excitement after her students collected 17 medals during the SA championship at Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre on August 31.

“The students did well. All the students that participated were placed” said Venter.

Elan Ilunga won a gold in kumite and bronze in kata. His daughter Joyce won silver in kata, kumite and team kata. Elan’s other daughter, Peace, claimed a pair of gold medals in kata and kumite and silver in the team kata.

Jeandre Liebenberg won gold in kata and bronze in kumite while Carmen Griggs clinched silver in both categories. Dante Lucas won a gold in weapons and silver in kata and kumite.

Samantha Joubert and Lionel Rudling got a silver and gold in kata respectively.

The club’s last competition of the year is the Gauteng North Championship in October.
