Plot gardens will be a blooming sight to behold

Funds raised are in aid of HELM.

Large black wattles sway in the wind, their song telling stories of loved ones and friends who have contributed to the colourful array of blooming buds in Glynnis Wilson’s well-established plot garden.

In less than two months, this garden, along with four others in Marister, will swing open its gates to welcome garden lovers, neighbours and those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city to the second annual Benoni North Open Gardens show.

This follows the success of last year’s inaugural show and will again be in aid of HELM, a community driven organisation that operates throughout the city’s vast plot communities.

This unique garden show will run over two days, November 23 and 24, and will showcase richly diverse gardens.

“The focus will once again be on self-sustainable gardens featuring lush vegetable patches, blossoming fruit orchards nestled amongst hardy and resilient sprouts,” said Glynnis, one of the organisers.

“The gifted gardeners will all be present on both days to guide interested visitors through their agricultural oasis while offering invaluable hints and tips on request.”

HELM chairperson Alan Mallinick said his team are excited to be part of the upcoming event and are grateful for the community’s unwavering support for the organisation.

“Plot living requires resilience and an out of the box approach to daily challenges,” he said.

“Here no man is an island and it is through community involvement and support we are able to ensure our safety and sustainability.

“We look forward to sharing our smallholding havens with our urban neighbours.”

Building on its success, the route will feature three refreshment stops as well as a garden market, where visitors can get their hands on decadent preserves, baked goods and other delights freshly prepared by members of the industrious plot community.

“The tour promises to marvel and delight visitors. It is a great day outing for families and friends to enjoy,” said Glynnis.

“We have also secured a host of great raffle prizes.”

Tickets will go on sale in mid-October and can be purchased through Quiket or at participating gardens on the day.

Gates open from 08:30 to 16:30.

Tickets are R70 for a day pass and R100 for a weekend pass while children under 12 enter for free.
