Eastern Cricket mourns death of head groundsman Mncedisi Radebe

His memorial service will be held at Willowmoore Park, Presidential Suite, on October 3 at 14:00.

Members of Eastern Cricket Union are mourning the death of Mncedisi Radebe, the head groundsman at Willowmoore Park, who was killed on New Modder Road on September 27.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, Radebe fell off his motorcycle and was then struck by two vehicles at around 20:00.

“Police found a rope at the scene, which they suspect criminals might have threaded across the road to hook his bike, causing him to fall,” Sekele said.

She said police are witnessing this new modus operandi for hijacking motorbikes. His motorcycle was taken to the police station.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Benoni SAPS.

Eastern Cricket Union announced Radebe’s sudden death on their Facebook page on October 1.

“Mncedisi was more than just a dedicated employee; he was the heart and soul of Eastern Cricket Union. His passion, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to his work were evident in every detail of the grounds he meticulously cared for.

“Always greeting everyone with a warm smile, Mncedisi took immense pride in his role, ensuring that Willowmoore Park was always in pristine condition for every match, no matter the scale. His contribution went far beyond the superb pitches he prepared.

“Mncedisi embodied the spirit of Eastern Cricket, a man whose joy and pride in his work inspired us all. His presence will be irreplaceable, and the gap he leaves behind is immeasurable.

“As we mourn this devastating loss, we remember Mncedisi not only for his outstanding service but for the genuine warmth and kindness he brought to our community. Rest in peace, Mncedisi. Your legacy will forever be etched in the heart of Eastern Cricket.”

His memorial service will be held at Willowmoore Park, Presidential Suite, on October 3 at 14:00.
