Crime in Brief

The fight against crime continues.

Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) successes:
Drugs
• Six suspects were arrested on charges of being in possession of drugs between September 21 and 24. The arrests were made at the Daveyton Hostel, Ivory Park, and Long Street, Kempton Park. A suspect arrested in Daveyton was found with 43 packets of heroin.

• Two men driving in a white Toyota Fortuner were arrested on September 25 when it was found they were transporting four large bags containing dagga. The arrest was made on the R25, and 44kg of dagga was confiscated.

Counterfeit goods
Three suspects were arrested on September 18 after they were found transporting suspected counterfeit goods.

Members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) were doing routine stop-and-search operations on Atlas Road and Bonaero Drive, Kempton Park, when they brought a white Isuza truck stop. After a thorough search, they found 17 bags containing an assortment of branded sneakers and sandals with an approximate value of R300 000.

Fraud
The Hawks arrested a 32-year-old man in Parkdene, Boksburg, on September 26 on fraud char. The incident allegedly occurred in Bela-Bela.

Rapid Response Services (RRS) successes:
From September 13 to 26, RRS units, including the Flying Squad, K9 Units and Highway Patrol across Gauteng, arrested 139 suspects.

Concentrated operations led to the arrest of 60 for charges like assault with the intent of causing grievous bodily harm, shoplifting, armed and common robbery, attempted murder, murder, theft, possession of counterfeit goods, domestic violence, culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol and contravening the immigration act.

A total of 76 hijacked and stolen vehicles were recovered, with 24 accompanying arrests.

Further investigations led to the recovery of nine unlicensed firearms. Two persons were arrested for possession.

Fifty-one suspects were arrested on charges of being in possession of drugs with the intent to sell. Heroin, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax and meth were confiscated.

Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS)
• The body of a 22-year-old man was recovered by Tshwane WPDS members at the Zithobeni dumping quarry, Bronkhorstspruit, on September 25.

It is alleged a group of people were swimming at the site when the victim showed signs of distress. Attempts to rescue him failed, and the WPDS was deployed to assist.

A video of the incident indicated that the man went under 50m to 60m from the edge.

Following a 31-minute dive, his body was recovered at a depth of 5m.

Due to the water’s low temperature, it is suspected he might have suffered cramps and other complications associated with long exposure.

• The body of an unknown man was recovered from a manhole at Northern Farms, Erasmia.

A farm worker found the body, and it is unclear how the victim ended up in the uncovered manhole.

Abandoned vehicles
• A beige BMW X3 was found in Leondale. It was reported stolen in Alberton.

• A white Volkswagen Polo and a white Ford Ranger were recovered in Brakpan. Both were reported as hijacked.

• A white Range Rover was found on Pretoria Road, Boksburg. It was reported as hijacked in Randburg.
