Zenzo Ndabula bids Tambo Memorial farewell

After nearly five years of leadership, Ndabula is set to step down on September 27, following a promotion that will see him take on a new role in another province.

Tambo Memorial Hospital (TMH) held a farewell ceremony to honour its outgoing CEO, Zenzo Ndabula, on September 19.

After nearly five years of leadership, Ndabula stepped down on September 27.

This follows a promotion that will see him take on a new role in another province.

Ndabula joined TMH on November 1, 2019, as CEO, following his tenure as a quality assurance manager at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Diepkloof.

His appointment came shortly before at a time of unprecedented Covid-19 challenges in 2020.

Reflecting on his tenure, Ndabula remarked, “When I was appointed, it was during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The outbreak tested my leadership in ways I had never experienced before, but we prevailed.”

He added that the December 24, 2022, gas tanker explosion in which 42 people died, including hospital staff, further tested the resilience of his leadership team.

“Though we lost our colleagues, we remained strong and continued to serve our community. It wasn’t easy, but we pushed through.”

Ndabula urged staff to continue working with dedication, noting, “Many patients trust the level of care here, and that shows their confidence in the hospital. There’s still much to be done and healthcare services continue to face challenges, but I hope the same commitment remains.”

Clinic manager Dr Khulekane Shezi, who welcomed the guests, commended Ndabula’s leadership and vision.

“When this CEO arrived, he turned things around. The hospital is undergoing much-needed renovations because of his efforts. The Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) even recognised TMH with a certificate of compliance, an honour that few hospitals receive,” she said.

Shezi emphasised the remarkable turnaround achieved under Ndabula’s leadership.

“We were once ranked among the worst-performing hospitals in Gauteng, but now we are in the top 10 best-performing hospitals.

“Ndabula’s wisdom and collective leadership made that possible. He brought integrity, humour and honour to his role, and we are lucky to have had him as our CEO.”

Mosima Mmotla, a representative from the hospital’s board, expressed deep gratitude for Ndabula’s service.

“Every beginning has an end, and every end is the start of a new journey. We will miss you Ndabula, but we know you are moving forward to bigger things.

“On behalf of the board, we extend our heartfelt thanks for everything you have done. You care deeply for people, you acknowledge their worth and you have always shown respect.

“As you move on to the next chapter of your career, our staff and the community will undoubtedly feel the absence of your strong, compassionate leadership.

“However, your legacy will continue to shape the hospital for years to come. Take care and farewell,” said Mmotla.
