Bakkie thefts on the rise in Benoni warns CPF

Toyota Hilux bakkies and Ford Rangers are among those being targeted by criminals.

Fifty-one vehicles, the majority of which are high-end 4x4s, have been stolen in and around Benoni since the beginning of August.

Benoni CPF spokesperson Stephan Lombard confirmed that Toyota models such as Quantum, Hilux and Fortuners as well as Ford Rangers are in high demand.

“To date five Quantums, 10 Hilux bakkies, 15 Fortuners and 21 Rangers have been stolen. Nine were recovered. Most of the recoveries had been made in Soweto and the vehicles were stripped.

“We believe theft of these vehicles has increased due to cross-border demand for spare parts.”

The thefts have been widespread and Lombard cautions vehicle owners to remain vigilant by ensuring their vehicles are always securely parked.

“We are working closely with local law enforcement to apprehend the perpetrators and close in on the syndicate currently operating in the area.

“We are appealing to the community to report any suspicious people loitering in parking areas or near vehicle models currently being targeted.

“Information can be supplied anonymously to Crime Stop 08600 10111.”
