WATCH: Shack dweller operating illegal scrapyard evicted

According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, prior to the dismantling and removal of the illegal structure, the man was warned.

Members of the EMPD Land Invasion Unit and the Department of Human Settlements recently demolished a shack in the Gabon informal settlement in Daveyton after a complaint about a man who operated an illegal scrapyard.

According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, before the dismantling and removal of the illegal structure, the man was given numerous warnings not to occupy or utilise the land for an illegal scrapyard operation, as the area is designated for residential purposes.

During the operation, the man was nowhere to be found; however, his elderly mother arrived a few minutes later to find out why her son’s shack was being removed.

A shack that was illegally erected and utilised as a scrapyard has been dismantled by members of the EMPD.

Speaking to the Benoni City Times, the devastated mother said she didn’t know where her 40-year-old son, his girlfriend, and their child would live now that their shack had been demolished.

Dlamini said the metal structures are being kept at the EMPD Brakpan pound, and if the owner wants to reclaim them, he may contact the Department of Human Settlements.
