Lions spring into action in September

Selling 700 sweet treats secures R7 000 for charity.

Selling cupcakes and raising funds are just some of the many hats the Benoni Lakes Lions Club members don.

September has been a roaring success for the club as it was the first in District 410E to host the newly inducted district governor, Perry Chetty.

“Using this opportunity, we encouraged the members to wear silly hats to the general business meeting on September 10,” said Beaulieu Mare of the club.

“We hosted District Governor Chetty in this vibrant atmosphere while raising funds for the Lambano palliative care centre for children.”

Impressed with the club’s spirit, the governor commended club president Nick Mare and his members for undertaking projects that serve the community under the Lions Club’s five pillars of service.

“I challenged you to grow membership, thus enabling you to expand your reach throughout the community,” said Chetty.

Focusing on Cancer Awareness Month, the pride were out in full force, selling Cupcakes for Cancer at the Benvino Spring Wine Festival on September 14.

“Following an appeal to local bakers, we hoped to receive 500 cupcakes in donations,” said Mare.

“We were overwhelmed with the community’s kind-hearted support and happy to announce that we raised R7 000 by selling 700 flavourful fairy cakes. We also successfully registered six visitors as organ donors at the wine festival.”
