FOLLOW-UP: Trial against alleged serial rapist in recess

The trail will continue following a short recess.

The trial against alleged Daveyton/Thembisa serial rapist Sipho Lucas Phiri is in recess until September 30 due to the judicial term coming to an end.

Thirteen witnesses have taken the stand since the trial against the former Prasa security guard started on September 6, during a Gauteng Division High Court sitting at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.

The 38-old-year faces, among others, 44 counts of rape, 43 of kidnapping, 41 of pointing a firearm, and 17 additional charges, including fraud, obstruction of justice, forcing someone to witness a sexual act, and contraventions of the Police Act and the Firearms Control Act.

It is alleged that Phiri’s reign of terror started in Thembisa and Norkem Park in September 2018 and continued until August 2020.

Sixteen cases were reported during this time.

It is alleged that the accused also raped 21 women in Daveyton and Putfontein from May 2021 up until his arrest on January 22, in Mayfield.

Of the witnesses who have testified, three of the complaints were under the age of 16 at the time of the alleged rape.
