FOLLOW-UP: Upcoming Christmas party has Gardens residents excited

A sprinkling of festive magic in celebration of a successful year.

For the first time in many years, the 365 residents of Farrarmere Gardens are excited to celebrate the festive season.

Since the beginning of the year, Nelia du Plessis, dubbed the Gardens’ angel, has worked tirelessly to drum up support for the community, which felt forgotten by their neighbours.

“There has been a tremendous turnaround within the community since I initiated my outreach work here,” said Du Plessis.

“The generosity of the donors has been overwhelming. We are serving delicious meals every week and have recently established our store where ‘Garderners’ can buy clothes, homeware and linen at R1 a piece.”

She explains that funds raised through these sales aid in buying other necessities while boosting the residents’ morale.

“The residents are regaining confidence and dignity by personally selecting what they want and paying a nominal fee. It is no longer a matter of only accepting handouts,” Du Plessis said.

“There has been an incredible shift throughout the area. The residents have a newfound enthusiasm and positive outlook on life. I am in awe of the strides they have made and am incredibly proud of their grit.”

To celebrate a year of small miracles, Du Plessis wants to host a festive Christmas party in honour of those she describes as her family.

“We are fortunate to have a present for every child but would appreciate donations of pamper products for the adults as well,” she said.

“I would also love to give every household some yummy treats such as biscuits to enjoy on Christmas day.”

With the date for the year-end party set for December 7, she also appeals for donations that could help make the day one to remember.

“Anyone willing to contribute to the day’s eats and refreshments and possibly supply us with the jumping castle for the children to enjoy would be greatly appreciated,” she said.
