Five arrested following armed robbery
The suspects will be appearing in the Benoni Magistrates’ Court soon.
Three men and two women were arrested minutes after committing an armed robbery at a salon in Howard Street, on September 14.
According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, an off-duty police officer’s swift action led to the success.
“The officer, who is based in Kempton Park, was travelling in a marked state vehicle and was en route to report for duty when he was stopped by a frantic group of people claiming that a quintet, travelling in a Toyota Aygo had robbed them at gunpoint,” she said.
“Calling for backup, the officer tactfully followed the suspects’ vehicle, which was stopped in Voortrekker Road.
“Upon searching the vehicle, the group were found in possession of goods allegedly taken during the robbery. Two toy guns were also recovered,” said Sekele.
