Police are seeking the public’s help to find the suspects who hijacked and kidnapped Moipone Mhlongo, a Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) member, at around 19:00 on September 2, in Etwatwa.

According to SAPS provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, four armed men accosted Mhlongo, demanded her vehicle, and forcefully drove off with her.

“They also robbed Mhlongo of her cellphone before releasing her in a veld, unharmed,” said Masondo.

The vehicle was later recovered in Daveyton.

Meanwhile, Bandile Masuku, the GPL chairperson of the portfolio committee on Community Safety, expressed relief that Mhlongo was found unharmed.

“While the committee is immensely relieved by Mhlongo’s safe return, it remains deeply concerned about the broader implications of such heinous acts of criminality.

“The unprecedented rise in violent crimes, including extortion, armed robberies and hijackings, continues to create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity that no longer can be ignored in our communities.

“At times like this, decisive action is required to restore law and order, protect lives and prevent the further deterioration of safety across various communities.”
