Sewage continues to seep into Civic Lake

Water is gushing out of a blocked manhole and spilling into the lake.

Despite the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE)’s promise to repair a broken pump station that resulted in the pumping of raw sewerage into Civic Lake near Lakeside Mall, it seems nothing has been done as sewer continues to spill into the lake.

The municipality cited damage to the main pump station near the lake as a result of the incident when Benoni City Times first reported that a blocked manhole on the bank of Civic Lake near Voortrekker Street, resulted in untreated sewage spilling into the stream.

The sewage flows directly into the lake.

Municipal spokesperson Zweli Dlamini reported at the time that the city’s specialised services would repair the main pump station near the lake.

Dlamini added that the municipality attends to all blockage problems, prioritise incidents posing a danger to the fauna and flora in the areas around water bodies and those that are hazardous to the health of people who use these facilities for recreational purposes.

The sewage has formed a bog around the manhole.

The City Times visited the area at the end of July and again on August 9. We found water gushing out of the manhole, forming a stream that flowed directly into the hyacinth-infested water body.

The sewage has formed a bog and a nauseating stench from the spillage blanketed some parts of the border of the Benoni CBD and the Avenues, while birds are often spotted feeding on the reeds next to the manhole.
We have sent an enquiry to the municipality and are awaiting a response.
