Evelyn nourishes our golden oldies

The NPO operates at Vunanimfundo Community Centre in Etwatwa.

In celebration of Women’s Month, the Benoni City Times features Evelyn Xalabile (71).

She is the founder of Ubuhle Bemvelo Centre, a non-profit organisation based in Etwatwa which provides healthy meals to the elderly and the less fortunate.

Ubuhle Bemvelo was established in 2022 after seeing a need in her community.

“When I saw how malnutrition affected some of the older people’s quality of life in the community, I knew I had to do something to help because healthy nutrition is important to fight chronic illnesses.”

She started providing balanced, easy-to-eat meals for the elderly, catering for various dietary needs.

Her organisation, which feeds the community three times a week, offers skill-building activities for seniors, including gardening and knitting.

She operates at Vunanimfundo Community Centre with the help of volunteers.

“We started serving the meals at a local park but faced difficulties during unfavorable weather conditions. During rainy days, it was impossible for us to serve the meals, leaving our beneficiaries to suffer from hunger,” said Xalabile.

Ubuhle Bemvelo, which solely relies on donations from generous members of the community, has had a significant impact on its recipients.

Evelyn Xalabile operates her NPO at Vunanimfundo Community Centre.

“It is humbling to hear recipients rave about the program, saying my meals are a lifesaver.”

Some of the challenges she faces in her line of work include transporting the food from donors to the venue.

As Ubuhle Bemvelo continues to expand, Xalabile aims to establish partnerships with healthcare providers and extend services to reach more seniors.

The mother of seven also sells her own made cushions.

Initially, she assisted drug addicts before working with the elderly.

Her message for Women’s Month is as follows: “A true Mbokodo (rock) is person that doesn’t give up easily. Get up every morning and provide for your children.”
