The Boksburg Athletic Club will host the Tommy Malone Memorial Race at the Boksburg City Stadium on October 13.

The race, held in honour of the Comrades Marathon and road running legend, is back after being cancelled last year.

It was last held in 2019 when it replaced the Burger and Co 15km race.

Malone was the club’s first chairperson when he was elected at its inaugural meeting held at the ERPM Rugby Club on October 29, 1975.

His Comrades Marathon career spanned 10 years, winning his first Ultimate Human Race in 1966. But he is remembered for coming second in the 1967 race after cramping and tripping metres from the finish line, which allowed Manie Kuhn to claim the victory.

He won two Comrades Marathon gold medals and eight silvers and achieved his green number 62.

He passed away on April 25, 2019, aged 81.

The race includes 15km race and a 5km fun run.
