Shotorun a success

The event was held to raise funds for the New World Shotokan (NWS) Karate Crystal Park dojo.

Reitumetse Maseko and Vea Jacobs conquered the men’s and women’s 5km shotorun at CR Swart Park on Women’s Day (August 9).

Dressed in purple, Maseko, Jacobs and over 50 runners laced up their running shoes to raise funds for the New World Shotokan (NWS) Karate Crystal Park dojo, as well as to celebrate Women’s Day.

Maseko beat the decent field to arrive home first overall. He was followed in second place by Drian van Bergen and seven-year-old Thoriso Morwane rounded up the podium.

Jacobs won the women’s race, beating runner-up Antoinette Kruger and Mandy Mackridge, who grabbed the third spot.

The proceeds from the fundraiser will help cover travelling costs to national, continental and international competitions; buy new equipment; and help the dojo cover its daily expenses.

“Besides helping us cover our travel expenses, the funds are also going to help us purchase new equipment. The equipment has changed according to the rules,” said chief instructor sensei Loui Ramakulukusha.

According to Ramakulukusha, the dojo has been struggling with dwindling membership and funding, citing the country’s economic constraints as the reason.

The race was also held to commemorate Women’s Day.

“The funds will come as a relief because of our economic situation. Parents are struggling and talented children are forced to drop out because their parents can’t afford fees. We use events like this to raise funds,” he said.

The sensei added the money raised from the event will also help their members who are preparing for the Commonwealth Karate Championships to be hosted in the country.

“We hope our members qualify for this event. We will use some of the funds to cover their entry fees.”
