Runners perform well ahead of provincials

The provinicial championships are on August 17 at the Kagiso Sports Complex.

The Central Gauteng Athletics Cross Country League concluded with some commanding performances from local runners during the eighth meeting at Delta Park in Randburg on August 3.

After almost four months competing in eight league meetings in various parts of the region, the athletes put foot to pedal in their last push for the provincial championships in Kagiso.

Girls

Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC)’s Kayla Botha led the charge with a second-place finish in the U11 3km category in 12:42. Alexia Visser also finished in second place in the U9 girls’ 2km race in an incredible 08:48. Rebecca Jones (09:53) was fifth, Shayla Lloyd (09:56) sixth and Claire Zillen (10:13) eighth in the same race.

Lea Klingenberg finished the U10 2km ninth, and Benoni High Athletic Club (BHAC)’s Camryn de Meyer clocked 09:43 for ninth place in the junior women’s 2km race.

Emma Hickely of the BHAC was fourth in the U14 4km race after crossing the line in 18:37. Hickley’s teammate, Mary-Jane Nel, finished eighth in the U15 km race.

Kiana Pepler clinched the U17 4km in 17:42, while Bronwyn Nel continued thriving in the junior women’s 6km race. She ran to victory in 25:54.

The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC)’s Charlotte Venter finished second in the sub-veteran women’s 4km race in 20:50.

Boys

Henry Hamman claimed third in the U8 1km race. He crossed the line in 04:09, while his Northerns teammates Andrè Klingenberg (04:26) and Aaron Akachukwu Ani (04:36) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Nathan Logan van Zyl finished 13th.

Bokamoso Nonyane won his eighth race after dominating the U10 2km event again. He cut the tape in 07:32, while teammates Omphile Chaka and Ashley Peens continued their steady improvement after finishing the race 15th and 24th.

Joshua Helena (08:30) and Kaden Price (08:43) were third and fourth in the U9 2km race, while Charlie Kupfer (09:46) finished the race ninth.

Davee Nqosa of the BHAC finished the senior men’s 2km race eighth in 07:04.

The focus now shifts to the provincials in Kagiso on August 17.
