Police recover suspected stolen copper

Flying squad continues its fight against crime.

Two men were arrested in separate incidents and an estimated R840 000 worth of copper has been recovered.

The first arrest was made on the morning of July 30 on the R555, Etwatwa.

According to Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, spokesperson for the Benoni Flying Squad, officers were conducting routine operations when they instructed the driver of a silver Honda to stop.

“A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of suspected stolen copper with an estimated value of R40 000. The 33-year-old driver was arrested,” he said.

Following this success, a man travelling in a Mitsubishi truck was arrested on the Snake Road onramp, just after 20:30, on August 1.

“A routine stop and search was again conducted upon which officers discovered that the vehicle was being used to transport R800 000 worth of copper,” said Giblin.

“The driver was unable to produce documentation for the goods and was therefore arrested.”

Investigations are continuing.
