Crime in Brief

The investigations continue.

Between July 21 and 26, the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) and Gauteng Rapid Response Services (RSS) brought 156 suspects to book and confiscated large quantities of dagga.

Possession of drugs
• Three men, travelling in a white Toyota Hilux, were arrested on Laris Street, Etwatwa, on July 21.
Following a routine stop-and-search, officers found 19 large parcels of dagga in the vehicle, with an estimated street value of R25 0000.

Upon their arrest, the suspects allegedly offered the BFS officers R1 000 for their release.

The suspects were detained at the Etwatwa Police Station.

Officers arrested a 24-year-old man at the Duduza informal settlement, Ivory Park, on charges of being in possession of cocaine.

• Officers arrested three men on the R555, Etwatwa, on July 23 for transporting two bags containing dagga.
The suspects were travelling at a high speed in a white Ford Bantam when BFS officers managed to stop the vehicle.

They confiscated dagga valued at R6 000 and impounded the vehicle.

• Acting on a tip-off, officers caught a 36-year-old man offloading three large bags of dagga on Sangori Road, Elandspark, on July 24.

They confiscated dagga with an estimated street value of R15 000.

• The law enforcers arrested a 40-year-old suspect on Elston Avenue on charges of being in possession of heroin.

Firearm recovered
A bag containing a 9mm Taurus pistol was recovered in the veld next to the R25 on July 22.
During routine patrols, BFS members noticed a suspicious-looking man carrying the bag. The suspect ran into the nearby veld when he saw the officers approaching.

It was established that the firearm was reported stolen in Ivory Park in June.

• Officers arrested a 35-year-old man on July 25 at a roadblock on Masakhane Street, Katlehong.

They found the suspect in possession of a firearm containing five live rounds of ammunition.

Vehicle theft
BFS members arrested two suspects on Lower Germiston Road, Delville, on July 24.
Officers responded to a call from a local security company claiming that personnel was pursuing a grey Hyundai i10 linked to reports of theft of motor vehicles.

They found the suspects with vehicle-breaking implements and a one-channel military signal jammer.

Water Policing and Diving Services
Ekurhuleni Water Policing and Diving Services members recovered the body of an unknown man from the Natalspruit River, Zonkizizwe, on July 24.

The victim suffered visible head trauma.

Investigations on the recovery are underway, and anyone with information is urged to call CrimeStop on 08600 10111.

RRS
Members of the Flying Squad, K9 Units and Highway Patrol, which falls under the RRS banner, arrested 144 suspects.

During routine operations, they arrested 69 suspects on charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of suspected stolen property, armed robbery, robbery, possession of house-breaking implements, possession of unlicensed ammunition, theft, damage to property, attempted murder, rape, house-breaking, kidnapping, shoplifting, contravention of the Immigration Act and drunken driving.

The officers recovered 53 hijacked and stolen vehicles and made 12 accompanying arrests.

Further policing led to the arrest of 16 suspects and charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms.

The law enforcers made 47 arrests on the charges of possession of drugs.

Officers confiscated heroin, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax and meth.
