Update Rand Water Maintenance: May take two weeks for water to be fully restored in some areas

Rand Water previously warned that it would embark on extensive maintenance, phased over the period between June 15 and the end of July.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has warned that it could take up to two weeks before the system fully recovers following Rand Water’s maintenance project.

Residents of some parts of Benoni, Daveyton and Etwatwa have been without water since July 26.

Scenes of people carrying buckets plagued Etwatwa residents on July 28 as they roamed the streets in search of water.

According to CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the water supply network in these affected areas – Daveyton, Etwatwa, Vosloorus, Brakpan, Springs, Nigel, Tsakane, Kwa-Thema, Duduza and parts of Benoni – is empty and could take weeks to normalise.

“Areas based on where they are located will gradually have water from today,” said Dlamini.

He added the bulk water supplier has indicated that they completed the maintenance work and is in the process of charging their lines and reinstating pumping.

He said roaming water tankers have been dispatched to the affected areas as they continue to monitor the situation.
