Thousands of illegal power connections removed in Mayfield

The multidisciplinary team disconnected illegal and dangerous connections in Mayfield.

A joint operation led by the Ekurhuleni metro’s energy department has left residents of Mayfield Ext 8 and 9 without power.

On July 25, metro officials flanked by members of the EMPD, SAPS and Gauteng Traffic and Crime Prevention units, descended on the township, removing 4 500 illegal electricity connections.

The collaborative effort aims to prevent electricity theft, thus ensuring public safety while protecting essential infrastructure.

“Illegal connections do not only put the lives of innocent people at risk but it also puts the electricity grid under severe pressure, which in turn leads to power outages, due to the system being overloaded,” said metro spokesman Zweli Dlamini.

“We are appealing to communities to refrain from these illegal practices. The city will continue conducting disconnection operations unabated.”
