WATCH: ‘Yap-yap-hooray’ for new pug play area

The new play area forms part of the organisation’s expansion project.

Resounding cheers echoed throughout Pug Rescue SA on July 20 as the organisation’s reigning monarch, King Pickles (15), officially opened the new play area.

The new addition to the facility comes after a long-time supporter from the Eastern Cape generously donated the 16 242m2 neighbouring property to the animal welfare organisation last year.

The donation forms part of the donor’s living legacy.

King Pickles the dwarf pug was the centre of attention after being tasked with opening the organisation’s newly completed pug play area.

“With our occupancy growing daily, it became evident that we were in dire need to create more and larger play areas for our curly-tailed residents,” said Cheryl Gaw, Pug Rescue SA founder.

“Through the generous donation and countless hours dedicated to the cleaning, clearing and building of the play area, we are able to unveil the final product.

“Under the watchful eye of the pug carers, our flat-nosed companions will be able to play to their hearts’ content, truly enjoying a dog’s life.”

Cheryl further explained that three of the play areas as well as the connecting path, were named after some of their late residents.

Pug Rescue is committed to ensuring that every animal in its care enjoys quality of life.

Due to the chronic health-related issues suffered by the honoured pugs, it was deemed humane to gently guide them over the rainbow bridge

“Each animal in our care is special, however, every now and then our home is blessed with incredibly special pugs living with unique challenges,” she said.

“Although these tender souls left our lives too soon, their grunts and wide-eyed wonder will forever live in our hearts. We, therefore, thought it fitting to name these areas after Princess, Crimson, Blake and Puggy.”

Looking ever so regal while resting comfortably in the arms of Alicious Nkonzo, Pickles officially opened the park.

Despite being a pug of few words, he gave a wet nosed approval.
