Masuku’s defence counsel dies

At a previous sitting on June 25, the proceedings stalled due to the unavailability of Advocate Kanyane who was reportedly sick.

The defence lawyer of Veli Masuku, the convicted husband of slain Daveyton SAPS officer Prudence Masuku, has died.

This was disclosed in court on July 16 where sentencing proceedings against Masuku and his co-accused, Lawrence Dlamini, were set down for July 16 to 19.

Briefing the court on these new developments, Advocate Letau Kgokane from the Pretoria Legal Aid office told the court that he was sent to represent accused one (Masuku) after receiving news that his colleague, Advocate Kanyane, had died.

Kgokane added that Masuku said he and his family have decided to seek the services of a private attorney to take over the case.

Judge Rasigamani Bhika postponed the matter until July 30 so Masuku could sort out his legal representation.

At a previous sitting on June 25, the proceedings stalled due to the unavailability of Kanyane, who was reportedly sick.

Masuku and Dlamini were found guilty on April 8 of murdering Prudence on June 23, 2022, in Mokgoba, Putfontein, while she was on her way to work accompanied by her husband.

She was seven months pregnant when the murder occurred.
