CGA wishes Olympians well

The organisation will represented by seven athletes, including local runner Lythe Pillay.

The Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) sent its well wishes to the seven athletes who will represent the province at the Paris Olympics from July 26 to August 11.

Benoni and 400m national champion Lythe Pillay is one of the athletes, while ultra-distance queen and Comrades Marathon record-breaker Gerda Steyn was announced as the seventh CGA Olympian who will represent SA at the global showpiece.

The rest of the athletes are 1500m sensation Ryan Mphahlele, sprinter Akani Simbine, long jumper Chesswill Johnson, shot-putter Kyle Blignaut and marathoner and the Johnson Crane Hire Marathon women’s record holder, Cian Oldknow.

The CGA acting president Karabo Mabilo urged the community in central Gauteng to support the athletes during the games and beyond.

“As a province we understand that the Olympic Games are not just about winning medals but a celebration of excellence at the highest level of sports. We have used the send-off event (July 10) as a platform to celebrate our athletes and most importantly to inspire the upcoming athletes from various communities in the province who have a dream of being Olympians one day,” said Mabilo.

“We encourage all our development athletes and clubs to take this as an inspiration to go on the ground and unearth talent.”

The organisation will run daily campaigns in the days leading up to the opening of the games campaigns to celebrate each athlete.

Simbine will be one of team SA’s flag bearers.
