Local teacher scores parkrun century

"With my knee injury, I can’t play hockey anymore. Parkrun has helped me to stay fit without hurting myself too much.”

The parkrun has motivated St Dunstan’s College teacher Deidre Nienaber (58) to stay fit.

Nienaber achieved an incredible milestone when she ran in her 100th event at Ebotse on July 13.

“It keeps me young,” she said.

After initially showing no interest when her hockey teammates tried to get her to join them in the parkrun, she finally gave in when she ran her first event in November 2019. She has never looked back.

“I played hockey and my teammates did the parkrun. One day I went with them and finally did it. I suffered a serious knee injury during Covid-19 but I began running again,” said Nienaber.

“With my knee injury, I can’t play hockey anymore. Parkrun has helped me to stay fit without hurting myself too much.”

She encourages anyone to take part in parkrun because of the health and mental benefits.

“I’m trying to get my Grade Seven learners to join me. I jog cross-country with them. I’m trying to convince them to do the parkrun because the 5km distance will improve their fitness.”
