A young Benoni man is in critical condition in the Milpark Hospital’s Trauma ICU following an accident on the N12 west near the Atlas Road offramp in the early hours of July 6 in which his cousin Michael Kruger (17) was killed.

Spiros Paizes (23), the son of local business owners Mike Paizes and Kirsty Mcvie and a member of the Benoni Mactalla Pipe Band, was airlifted from the scene after the BMW he was driving collided with the barricade on the left-hand side of the road and overturned. It landed in a stormwater culvert on the side of the highway.

Michael, a former Benoni High School learner who was completing Grade 11 through online schooling, was the son of Paul Kruger and Demitra Paizes.

Michael Kruger (17) was killed in the accident.

According to EMPD media liaison officer Ann Makgato, the accident happened at around 01:40.

“The vehicle was travelling along the N12 west. The driver lost control and collided with the barricade and the car overturned,” she said.

The family thanked family and friends for all their support during this tragic time.

According to Mcvie, Spiros is in a critical but stable condition.

According to the family, Spiros Paizes and his cousin, Michael Kruger, were inseparable.

At the time of going to print, funeral arrangements for Michael had not been finalised.

“Spiros and Michael were inseparable,” Mcvie said.
