WATCH: Taking an icy plunge to warm others

After each race, swimmers were greeted by cheering crowds and warm towels.

St Dunstan’s College Grade Nine learners, Sabastian Dias, Travis Mantle, Kieron-Dante Wilkes, Trent Williams and Sven Bouwers posed for a picture with Ronny the Rhino during the Headmaster’s Polar Bear Swim Challenge event.

Plunging into the school’s icy swimming pool in support of those who are less privileged, learners of St Dunstan’s Preparatory School and the College braved the chilly water on June 28 to participate in the Headmaster’s Polar Bear Swim Challenge.

The teeth-chattering event saw about 100 learners and 36 parents and staff combined, including St Dunstan’s Preparatory School headmaster Craig McIlrath, College headmaster Warwick Taylor and Olympics silver medallist Terence Parkin, taking part.

The event was also attended by Ronny the Rhino, a mascot who proved to be everyone’s favourite, and lifeguards from Lifesaving South Africa.

Thrilled to be part of the 2024 Headmaster’s Polar Bear Swim Challenge held at St Dunstan’s Preparatory School is Roxanne and Reegan Bellinghan.

Participants donated blankets towards the school’s blanket drive and this was supplemented by a donation of R10 000 from the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation.

McIlrath said, “In heeding the school’s motto ‘I serve’ we decided to host this challenge again this year, for the third year running. There are many people out there who are cold throughout winter, so what better way to experience this than getting cold for a little while to appreciate the plight of those who are less fortunate.”

McIlrath said the blankets will be donated to various charities in the coming weeks.

Foundation CEO Chantel Wittstock said they are pleased to have supported this great cause again this year.

“The importance of our involvement is to educate learners on water safety and drowning preventatives. We hope this initiative will continue to grow,” said Wittstock.
