Joint effort sees wanted suspects arrested

Multidisciplinary units arrested the evasive criminals after a dramatic chase.

Three men positively linked to two house robberies and home invasions in Rynfield as well as a string of motor vehicle thefts were arrested after a high-speed chase on June 28.

According to Frederick Koen of NoJack Vehicle Tracking, the suspects had evaded arrest for about 18 months.

The arrests come after members of private security companies, the Benoni CPF, the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) and the Gauteng SAPS Drone Unit responded to an alert dispatched via the Snipr licence plate recognition system dotted throughout the city.

A white Audi Q5, reported as stolen, was flagged when travelling on Thirteenth Avenue, Northmead.

“Units responded, with the drone unit supplying us with aerial support,” said Koen.

The occupants of the maroon Toyota Corolla were treated on the scene.

“A high-speed chase ensued, resulting in the driver losing control on the Voortrekker Road bridge. The vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming maroon Toyota Corolla.”

Trying to flee the scene, two men ran into Danie Taljaard Park from the vicinity of the McDonalds on Bunyan Street.

“With the help of the Drone Unit, they were surrounded and arrested. Inside the vehicle, stolen goods from a housebreak-in on Reid Street, Rynfield, were recovered.

“The occupants of the Toyota were treated on the scene and taken to hospital for further treatment,” said Koen.

“This is yet another testament to the positive impact multidisciplinary role players have in the fight against crime,” said Archie Mouyis of the AfriForum Benoni branch.

“The success is attributed to the ongoing efforts of the Drone Unit, the BFS, the Johannesburg Flying Squad, the Trio Risk Management Drone Unit, AfriForum, the CPF, NoJack, Legendary Guardians Executive Protection, Black Hawk, DOT Towing, PHP, 4Warn Security and BadBoyz Security.”
