SAPS take illegal guns, ammo off streets

Then men have since appeared in court.

Officers arrested seven men recently for possession of unlicensed live ammunition and dangerous weapons.

According to Daveyton SAPS spokesperson Constable Ntando Ngomane, Crime Prevention officers received a tip-off about a group of men in possession of illegal guns at Matjeke’s Zone Tavern on Rolong Street.

Working with crime prevention wardens and various security companies, the team went to the given address, and upon entering the yard, a group of men consuming alcohol ran in different directions. A pursuit for the suspects ensued.

“Two suspects were apprehended inside the house and found in possession of a 9mm pistol, live ammunition and a bullet-proof vest.

The police confiscated this firearm and ammunition from the suspects.

In another room, they arrested another suspect after police found 16 live ammunition on him, while his two other friends, who were apprehended outside after jumping the wall, were each found in possession of 9mm pistols and live ammunition.”

Ngomane said officers found R8 000 where the men were sitting, but none could account for it.

“They also failed to produce licences for the firearms when asked to. They were then arrested and detained at the Daveyton SAPS,” said Ngomane.

Later that evening, officers arrested another man on Hlakwana Street during a police stop-and-search operation. They found the man in possession of a toy firearm, which they suspected was used in street robberies. He was charged with possession of dangerous weapons.

Furthermore, around 23:00, officers followed up on information about a man who allegedly robbed residents on Ramza Street.

“When police officers arrived at the given address, they searched the man’s room and found two 9mm-resembling firearms, which they discovered to be blank firearms.”

The recovered cash.

He was also arrested and charged with possession of dangerous weapons.

The men have since appeared in court.
