The participants received gold medals after the 3.5km fun walk.

Stepping up for better health, more than 50 senior citizens from Mayfield, Daveyton, started June 22 on a healthy note when they participated in a 3.5km fun walk around the streets of Daveyton.

Youngsters from the Samkelo Group Scouts also joined the walk.

According to project manager Samukelo Tshabalala, elderly people face many social ills, so events like these bring joy, dignity and fulfilment to their lives.

Tshabalala thanked the various donors who made this event possible.

“We thank the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture for the medals and water. The Gauteng Department of Community Safety for sponsoring us with lunch, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for donating sandwiches and cold drinks, and the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority for donating juice bottles. Mayfield Square donated T-shirts, school bags, and squeeze bottles, while Lakeside Pick ‘n Pay (Benoni) donated R2 500. We also thank ABSA and the private donors for their continued support,“ said Tshabalala.

The elderly folk in Daveyton are invited to join the organisation. They meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Christian Faith Assembly Church from 8:30.
