Crime in brief

Suspects were arrested on charges of various crimes, including robbery.

Members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) and SAPS Rapid Response Services (RRS) arrested 66 suspects during routine operations from June 14 to 22.

Cable theft
• On June 18, BFS members were conducting routine stop-and-search operations on the N12 near Daveyton.
A white Mazda bakkie transporting a large white bag was stopped.

A search of the contents of the cargo was conducted and R25 000 worth of suspected stolen copper cable was discovered.

The 41-year-old driver was arrested.

• On June 19, BFS members responded to a 10111 call.

The complainant stated that two men were allegedly tampering with an electricity box situated on Mercury Road.

The suspects were found in possession of copper cabling and mandrax.

Recovered vehicles
• BFS’ Sergeant Jaco Powell and Constable Jean-Mare Eksteen recovered a white Isuzu at Jet Park Road, Kempton Park, on June 21.

The vehicle was reported as stolen in a Midrand case.

• A white Nissan NP200 was found abandoned in Letsiakarana Street, Thembisa, it was reported as stolen in Ivory Park.

• A white Toyota Hilux was recovered in Ndlovu Street, Ivory Park. It was reported as stolen in the same area.

Robbery
On June 21, while travelling on the M1 highway near the Xavier off-ramp, Alberton, BFS officers Sergeant Jaco Powell and Constable Jean-Mare Eksteen spotted three men robbing a group of young boys.

The officers immediately jumped to the youth’s aid which led to their assailants attempting to flee.

The trio were arrested and found to be in possession of a panga, an unlicensed 9mm Glock pistol with serial numbers filed off and a cell phone belonging to one of the victims.

The suspects were detained at Booysens SAPS and will be appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

RRS successes
From June 14 to 22, units that form part of RRS, including Flying Squad, K9 Units and Highway Patrol across Gauteng, arrested 60 suspects.

Twenty-six arrests were made on charges of assault with the intent of causing grievous bodily harm, theft, possession of suspected stolen property, drinking and driving, armed robbery, culpable homicide, possession of illegal mining equipment and theft of motor vehicle.

Officers recovered 36 hijacked and stolen vehicles and arrested six on charges of being in possession of these vehicles.

Five suspects were arrested on charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms while 10 firearms were taken off the street.

A further 23 arrests were made for possession of and dealing in drugs. Heroine, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax and meth were confiscated.
