Three life terms plus 100 years for Etwatwa serial rapist

He was sentenced for six counts of rape, five of kidnapping, and two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Simphiwe Gift Siyaya (31) of Etwatwa was sentenced to three life terms and 100 years of direct imprisonment at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court recently.

He received this sentence for six counts of rape, five of kidnapping, and two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

According to the district communications officer, Captain Neldah Sekgobela, Siyaya was targeting young women in various areas in Ekurhuleni.

The court heard that on July 10, 2017, a 29-year-old woman was from a local tavern with a friend when they met Siyaya, who was also with his friends.

“Siyaya tried to talk to the 29-year-old, but she ignored him. Siyaya threatened to stab her with a knife when he forcefully took her to his place of residence where he raped her.”

He also raped another victim, a 20-year-old woman from Etwatwa, in his room.

On November 9, 2018, a 27-year-old woman was sitting in the car with her friend and her two-year-old child at the Daveyton Golf Club when three unknown men approached them. The men sat with them in the vehicle and later left the venue.

“According to the woman, Siyaya forcefully took her to the bushes while pointing a firearm at her and raped her. Siyaya apparently called his friend, and they took turns in raping her.

“When they were done, the woman discovered her vehicle was stolen with her two-year-old child inside. She went to the police station and on her way there, found her child abandoned on the road,” said Sekgobela.

Sekgobela said all the dockets were handed over to Detective Sergeant Kaizer Koantle Mbele, who conducted a thorough investigation.
Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole has commended Mbele for securing the lengthy sentence.
