Homer happy with IBD performance

May Homer finished the tournament with two medals.

Northmead resident and visually-impaired bowler May Homer was delighted after landing Team SA two medals during the International Bowls for the Disabled (IBD) Championships last month.

Homer and her partner, Keith Orrell, finished third in the B3/B4 mixed pairs, earning a bronze medal.

In their first game, they lost 19-9 to Hong Kong’s To Cheuk Kuen and Chan Ka Man but regrouped in round two with a 16-11 win over teammates Salomie Morries and Roy Pieters.

In round three, they were beaten 20-13 by the English pair of John Hollowell and Marjorie Convey. They defeated Kuen and Man 16-13 in their rematch and beat Morries and Pieters 15-12 in their last round-robin match.

In the playoffs, they oversaw Hollowell and Convey 15-11 to end with a shot average of 0.977% for third place.
“I think we did very well. Keith and I had tough games,” she said.

“Our first game against Hong Kong caused us problems because we were doing well but in the last two ends, we dropped too many shots. We ended up losing by 10 points. Because of the points deficit in this game, our shot average was low,” she said.

She finished second in the B3 women’s singles for a silver after losing the final 21-15 to her teammate, Nozipho Schroeder.

Homer lost to Schroeder by one point in their 19-18 opening-round thriller. But she beat Malaysia’s Norhasfalinda Binti Hamdan 21-8 before an 18-8 win against Hong Kong’s Mak Ka Yee.

She suffered her second loss to Schroeder (21-15) in round four and beat Binti Hamdan 16-8 in the next match. She claimed her second win over Ka Yee (20-11) in her last match to finish the competition with a shot average of 1.44% for the silver medal.

“I did fine in the singles. I lost to Princess (Schroeder), which was unfortunate, but I beat Hong Kong and Malaysia twice.”

The bowler said she was happy with her overall performance in the tournament.

Her husband, Paul, also her director, expressed his pride at his wife’s achievements in bowls since she started playing 18 years ago.

“May has achieved exceptional things. I’m very proud. I’m amazed at what she’s achieved with her bowls. She’s been playing for 18 years and has achieved many great things,” he said.
