Nibs to say farewell to Benoni with special guest artist

The Benoni High School alumni said Benoni roots are a deep and sacred part of his makeup and musical journey.

Former Benonian Nibs van der Spuy will perform his Farewell Concert on June 14 before returning to his second home, Portugal, permanently on June 17 to embark on a new work venture.

To make this evening special, Van der Spuy is happy to have singer and Shed & Silo manager Liezl van Rooyen join him on a few songs.

Liezl van Rooyen is a special guest artist at the Farewell Concert.

Van der Spuy said, “Everybody knows Liezl as the wonderful manager and face at Shed & Silo, but they know little about her wonderful voice and musical talent.”

The Benoni High School alumni told the Benoni City Times his Benoni roots are a deep and sacred part of his makeup and musical journey.

“Benoni is deep in my soul. I matriculated from Benoni High in 1983. I was an Eastern Transvaal swimmer and water polo player, but I always had music in my blood.

“I started the guitar aged 14 and was by then already writing my songs, having been inspired at an early age by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.”

About Nibs van der Spuy

Van der Spuy is one of the most extraordinary and exciting world acoustic guitarists and exports to come out of SA.

Raised in the fertile province of Kwa-Zulu Natal, he immersed himself in his natural environment to formulate a consummate and original sound.

Growing up with The Beatles and learning firsthand from traditional Zulu maskandi guitarists, he quickly soaked up a rich tapestry of his surroundings and beyond.

After playing the local folk scene around SA for years and gathering a loyal following, his big stage break came after supporting Crosby, Stills and Nash on their 1996 SA tour.

After that, he signed to Sheer (an SA World Music label), where he has released over 10 albums.

His third solo release, Beautiful Feet, received global accolades and was the album of the month in four German publications and the Radio France FIP pick of the week.

Van der Spuy continues to spread his music around the world, where he has shared stages with the likes of Ben Harper, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Gito Baloi, Kelly Joe Phelps, Piers Faccini, Phillip Henry, Hannah Martin and Shawn Phillips and recorded the critically acclaimed In the Shade of the Wild Fig with long-time friend and collaborator Guy Buttery.

Van der Spuy released his first solo album in seven years, Maiden of the River, in May 2022, written along the Lisbon coast during the global lockdowns.
