Mall investigating allegations of pensioners being targeted

An independent investigator will lead the investigation.

One Property Holdings, the managing agents for Northmead Mall, have appointed an independent investigator to look into reports of a spate of robberies occurring at the centre.

The Benoni City Times received an anonymous tip-off from a member of the community claiming that elderly shoppers are being targeted by criminals at the mall.

According to information received, unknown individuals bump into shoppers, especially near the Pep store.

“The suspects will then apologise for the incident, helping the shopper to steady themselves,” read the statement.

“During this time the individual would rob the shopper of their cellphone, wallet and even jewellery.”

It is further alleged that a member of the Benoni Police Station informed a complainant that 58 cases of this nature have reportedly occurred at the shopping centre.

Heidi Franck, the group COO for One Property Holdings, confirmed that one incident involving an elderly shopper was reported to Northmead Mall centre management.

“In response to this incident, we are actively reviewing and reinforcing our security protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of all our shoppers,” she said.

“The centre manager regularly attends monthly SAPS meetings to discuss security matters and collaborate with local law enforcement.

“To date, no other incidences of shoppers being targeted were raised as a concern at these meetings. We are, therefore, not aware of any more cases.”

In light of the City Times enquiry, Franck said an independent investigator has been appointed to look into the matter.

“The investigator will commence his inquiry as to the detail of other possible related cases to ascertain when and where these occurred,” said Franck.

“Once a detailed report has been completed, management will be able to formulate a strategy to prevent further incidents.

“We are committed to maintaining a secure environment and are collaborating closely with local authorities to address any concerns.

“It is in our interest to make sure the centre is safe and to treat the concerns raised with the urgency and focus they deserve.”

At the time of publication, no comment had been received from the Benoni SAPS.
