SAPS members continue to crack the whip on criminals.

While the community turned their attention to the national and provincial elections, members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) and SAPS Rapid Response Services (RRS) remained focused on bringing criminals to book.

Assault with the intent of causing grievous bodily harm
Members of the community stopped patrolling BFS officers at an accident scene on the corner of Great North and High Roads, Brentwood Park on May 27 at 07:30.

“These community members managed to detain a 43-year-old man after he allegedly stabbed a fellow road user in the arm,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson.

“The suspect and victim were allegedly involved in an accident which led to the assault. The suspect was detained after he attempted to flee from the scene.”

Stolen vehicle recovered
BFS officers assisted a tracking company in recovering a stolen Nissan X-Trail on May 28.

According to Giblin, they traced the vehicle to Railway Street, Benoni where a 36-year-old man was arrested for having the vehicle, which was reported as stolen in Boksburg North.

This man was arrested in Railway Street, Benoni, when he was found in possession of a stolen Nissan X Trail.

Fraud
A 35-year-old man was arrested at a residential complex in Boksburg North, on May 28.

The suspect is wanted in connection with a case of fraud in Springs.

Attempted theft of a vehicle
Thanks to the quick response of car guards stationed at Atlasville Mall, a 60-year-old man was arrested at 15:00 on May 29 on charges of attempting to steal a white Ford Bantam bakkie.

“The suspect allegedly pickpocketed the keys from the vehicle owner,” said Giblin.

Possession of drugs
The officers arrested two suspects aged 32 and 49 on May 30 on charges of being in possession of drugs.

They made the arrests on the corner of Elston and Park streets, Benoni and Akhalwaya Street, Actonville.

Heroine and meth were recovered.

RRS
From May 24 to 30, the Flying Squad, K9 and Highway Patrol units, which form part of the SAPS Rapid Response Services (RRS) arrested 109 suspects and recovered 20 unlicensed firearms throughout Gauteng.

Participating in concentrated patrols and operations, the officers arrested 57 suspects for crimes including assault with the intent of causing grievous bodily harm, robbery, fraud, attempted theft of a vehicle, rape, theft, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, public indecency, hijacking, murder, domestic violence, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed ammunition, drunk driving, bribery and house burglary.

Officers further successfully recovered 53 hijacked and stolen vehicles, making 10 accompanying arrests on charges of being in possession of these vehicles.

Further successes included seizing 20 unlicensed firearms and 10 accompanying arrests.

They also made 32 arrests on charges of being in possession of drugs with the intent to sell and confiscated

heroin, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax and meth.
