The baboon has since been named ‘Ballot’ due to his visibility around the time the country was gearing up for the 2024 national and provincial elections.

The male baboon that was spotted roaming the streets of Benoni on May 27 has been recaptured and released into the mountains in Magaliesberg.

Murray said they then transported the baboon to a wildlife veterinarian in Pretoria where a full medical assessment was conducted on him to ensure that he was healthy.
