AfriForum make roads a ‘hole’ lot safer

“Community driven initiatives not only unify residents but prove that a lot can be achieved if we stand together.”

On May 4, AfriForum’s Benoni branch knuckled down, filling 57 potholes, ensuring that some of the city’s roads are safer to navigate.

According to Jurie Ferreira, district coordinator for the East Rand, the local branch had been inundated with complaints of emergency response vehicles suffering damage en route to members of the community needing urgent medical assistance.

“It came to light that ambulances were frequently damaged due to potholes thus, putting lives of their patients at risk. We needed to take immediate action,” said Ferreira.

“With the help of countless volunteers as well as D.O.T Towing and Recovery ensuring our safety and that of other road users, potholes were filled in Fifth Avenue as well as Beryl, Mercury, Maan, Eybers and Shakespeare streets.

He continued by saying that while it is evident that the CoE is failing to fulfil its responsibility to the community, it was encouraging to see residents working together to improve their environment.

“It shows that when communities unite, we can make a significant difference in everyone’s lives,” he said.
