Police officer charged for driving under the influence

Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant General, Tommy Mthombeni, thanked community members who brought this bad behaviour to the attention of the police management.

An Etwatwa police constable has been charged with driving under the influence, driving a state vehicle without consent and reckless and negligent driving after a video of him made rounds on social media over the weekend.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the SAPS has noted with concern and dismay a video circulating on social media showing a member of the SAPS seemingly intoxicated inside a marked police vehicle.

“The member was not authorised to be driving the vehicle at that time. A departmental case has also been opened against the officer,” he said.

Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni thanked community members who brought this to the attention of police management.

“Such behaviour by a police officer will not be tolerated. Police resources, including vehicles, are meant to serve the community and accelerate service delivery.

“The abuse and misuse of state resources will not allowed,” said Mthombeni.
