Pipe band season kicks off on a high note

Don’t forget to diaries the SA Championships happening on July 27.

Bounds of talent and a sprinkling of luck from a white heather has contributed to the Benoni High Pipe Band kicking the 2024 gathering season off on a high note.

With many of the members having only recently joined the band, it was their first time performing competitively.

Tuning their pipes and falling into perfect rhythm the members took their positions during the Pirates Gathering held in Johannesburg, on April 13, placing first in the novice division.

Following on this success the band loaded their equipment, making the trek to South Coast Highland Gathering, in Amanzimtoti, on April 27.

Again the band wowed the judges, claiming taking top honours, beating Jeppe High School for Boys and Pretoria Boys High School.

Competing in piping and drumming solos, Cameron Wittstock became the overall winner of the HW Kinsey Novice Challenge, for piping, for the third consecutive year, while bandmate Christopher Myburgh claimed third place.

There are only five more gatherings scheduled before the Pipe Bands’ Association of South Africa’s (PBASA) annual SA Championships taking place at Benoni Northerns Sports Club, on July 27, during which members of junior novice band will defend their title of South African Pipe Band Champion and Champions of Champions.
