Venter dominates league race

She won the sub-veteran women’s 4km race in 20:39.

Charlotte Venter started the cross-country season positively after winning the sub-veteran women’s 4km race during the first CGA cross-country league meeting in Tsakane on April 20.

The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) athlete showed good form early on, tackling the thick grass and pools of water on the course incredibly well to finish the race in 20:39.

Behind her was Hollywoodbets AC’s Thandy Matlaila. The thespian joined the race minutes after the gun went off but dug deep to get back into contention.

Charlotte Venter and her son participated in the first CGA cross-country league meeting.

After the first loop, Matlaila caught up with the runners at the back, worked her way up the order and ultimately grabbed the second spot in 23:07.

The Springs Striders’ Liane van der Nieuwenhuizen clocked 23:35 to complete the top three.

Venter’s teammate, Christina Silale, finished seventh in the women’s 10km race, which Nicole Swanepoel of Boxer AC won.

Actress Thandy Matlaila came second in the race.

This year’s cross-country season consists of eight leagues. Athletes are required to run in four league meetings, plus the provincial championships on August 17, to be considered for selection in the team to represent CGA at the nationals on September 7 in Vanderbijlpark.

The CGA cross-country chairperson, Val Brentano, said she looks forward to seeing more athletes participating in the league meetings so the province can select a strong team for the national championships.

The next meeting is at Greenhills Stadium in Randfontein on May 4.

Brentano encouraged athletes to register on time to ensure all the logistics are planned for accordingly.
